Switching over to a macintosh.
I have been a long time cakewalk user, but i don't want to run windows on the mac.
So, i am considering cubase as my daw, but i have heard 4 is a bit crashy and buggy for macs. would anyone here recomend a different version of cubase? Are the older versions also buggy, are they just about as capable?
If cubase is a bad choice for a mac, can anyone recomend a DAW that is similar to cakewalk sonar?
Thanks so much!

Cubase 4 should be okay now for a Mac, I just put SX3 on my macbook and it's totally fine. The only thing to consider with Cubase 4 is the fact that it doesn't support DX plugins anymore, don't know if that's an issue for you.
If Cubase doesn't float your fancy, check out Logic 8, Emagic was bought by Apple a few years back so Logic only runs on Mac. A lot of people like it for the plugins, but I think you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between music made in any DAW these days. -

Agreed, but i can still tell the diference in WORKING with different DAWs. I find some to just feel more intuitive than others, sonar and live make so much more sence to my than logic. I guess everyone is different.
If i buy a used copy of cubase 4 and it doesn't come with the dongle, can i just purchase a new dongle off ebay for it? it would be much cheaper that way.
What are your thoughts?
Also, have you used 4 on a mac? because i have heard there are lots of bugs in it for macs but not for pcs. -

Cubase 4 should run fine on your mac, at 1st I was tripping also that Cubase 4 does not support DX plug-ings, but there is a solution for that, wrappers, I guess they sell a program called a wrapper,(about $60.00), that will wrap your DX plug-ins and convert them to whatever it is that Cubase 4 is running. I have a few friends that run Cubase on Macs and they dont seem to have any problems, though they do run Cubase on the windows side of the mac.But I also have a friend that runs it on the Mac side and his also runs fine. I would say a good way to go is to find some solid cracks for the ones your interested in and test them, when you find the one you like buy that one.
Good luck, -

wich version are they running. i haven't hear much reports of bugs withsx3, but cubase 4 (especially 4.1) i have heard people complaining of cpu spikes and crashing. i have heard of no problems reported by mac users running cubase in windows, but if i were to run windows on my mac (and i really do not want to), i would stick with cakewalk sonar which i love, own already, and have used for about 10 years, since the product was called "cakewalk pro audio".
Anyhow, it is reasuring to hear that you don't think i will have problems.
DO yall run cubase 4, or older versions? I am curious if there are less problems with some of the older versions.
is sx3 available for purchase anywhere, in case it turns out 4 sounds to hectic?
I have browsed the cubase forums, and it seems the mac users there are none too pleased with the support they are receiving with the extreem glitchyness they are experiencing.

Also...
Will sx3 woork in leopard?
if so, anyone updating to cubase 4 and looking to sell their old sx3? -
-
First off, if the dongle is gone, so is the software. If you buy a new dongle you can only transfer from another already licensed dongle, so if someone sells you Cubase without a dongle you're getting screwed.
Secondly, once you upgrade your license transfers to Cubase 4 so you can still run the older versions of SX, but you can't sell them seperately. I still have not upgraded to 4, I see no reason to. I'm sure you can buy a copy of SX3 for fairly cheap at this point. Just make sure it has the dongle... -
-
thanks buddy.
I didn't know how it goes with this dongle crap...
So is part of the program on it or something? Interesting. it is purely for anti-piracy i guess, right? it doesn't perform any other kind of function like any external processing or saving your personal settings, eh?
on amazon sx3 costs $599! that's more than cubase 4 is going for i think.
Any leads on a good place to purchase sx3, and will it run on apples new os leapord? -

Hi there, the dongle doesn't contain anything but a license key which is just a string of numbers and letters. When Cubase4 starts it looks for a valid license key on a dongle - if it can't find one, it won't open. No part of the program or user settings or anything on it but the license key.
If I were you, I would purchase a copy of Cubase 4, borrow an install disc for SX3 and use the C4 license to run SX3. Just my two cents. I don't know if SX3 will run on Leopard (I'm guessing no), but I know for a fact that it won't run native on the Intel Macs. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.SO NO SX3 for leopard?
And cubase 4 is looking rather glitchy...
HHhhmmmmmmMmm....
I will have to think about this. Maybe cubase is not going to be the DAW for me.
What do yall think? -

I think you'd be best served to check out Logic Studio...$499 gets you 3 proprietary programs & over 32 gigs of plug ins & content..& so far, I have found only one or 2 little glitches that were corrected by rebooting the program. I am quite simply blown away every time I fire it up. the interface has been totally simplified & editing & mixing are easier than ever. as far as i am concerned, for the money, it simply can't be beat!!!
