cubase 4.1.2 UPDATE is out... ...And I have questions!

Ahh, seems like some mac users are reporting that their projects actually RUN now! The update was just released today, so i will hold my breath and see how others test those waters in the coming weeks as people try it out.
4.1.1 was a nightmare for many mac users.

I run a legal copy of sx3 with their stupid plastic dongle on a mac. To update to 4, do I really need to purchase a legal copy? If i get the software somewhere, will my sx3 dongle work with it?

  • yes you do. The dongle holds a license to run the software and an SX3 license will not activate 4, but it is backwards compatible.
I didn't get to put it on my macbook over the weekend like I had hoped, so this 4.1.2 update is good news indeed!
    • So if i purchase the upgrade from steinberg, do I get a new dongle, or is there software that updates the license on the dongle i have.

I am glad for you that the 4.1.2 update came out in time. Let us all know how it runs for you on mac.
      • You just install the license on your current dongle. Thanks!
        • So if i do that, can i still run sx3, incase cubase 4 is as dangerously unstable the case may be?
Or will that entail, an uninstall, where I put the sx3 license back onto the key. How would that be done anyhow, is the liscence somewhere on my disk? I bought the disk and dongle from a friend of mine, and the license was already on the dongle.
          • you know, this is a damn good question. i'm kind of in the same boat. I bought SX 3 literally 2 weeks before they announced the release of version 4. I haven't upgraded yet because i'm waiting for them to work out the kinks.

i would definitely also like to know how easy it would be to revert back to 3 if 4 sucks on my machine.
            • OK, first of all, IMHO most of the kinks have been worked out with C4 and I am having no problems running the latest 4.1.2 on my PC. 4.0 was a bit dodgy, most of Steinberg's initial releases are a bit shaky, but they've dealt with a lot of the bugs and it seems to be running smooth. MAC users have had a bit off a rougher ride, but things seem to be better.
BTW, I would absolutely never go with the discussions on Cubase.net. They are completely negative and full of flaming and arguing. I've heard it described as a "pit of asps". There are far better Cubase communities on the net where people are actually helpful.
Part of the reason I think so many people have problems is that Cubase really runs best on a computer dedicated to Cubase and other audio software. If you've got a bunch of background programs running and you're doing all sorts of other things with the computer any program as complex as Cubase is going to start running into conflicts. You really do need a computer dedicated to audio production - I find it preferable to run one that doesn't even connect to the internet. Just my two cents.
When you upgrade from SX3 to 4 it is a clean install and doesn't effect your existing SX3 installation (or sx2, or sx1). You will still be able to open projects in SX3 and work on them as long as you feel more comfortable with SX3. Once you save a project in C4 you will no longer be able to open it in SX3, though, so just open copies in C4 for a while.
The way that the license upgrade works is that after you are done installing c4 on your computer, you have to open Syncrosoft's License Control Center on a web connected computer and plug your dongle in. Then you open the upgrade license wizard in Syncrosoft LCC and it will ask you for the license code that came in the box with the C4 disc. You enter it in, the LCC connects to the Syncrosoft server and confirms that it is a valid license code, and then you download the new C4 license. The SX3 license will be replaced, but a valid C4 license can open any of the SX series. Incidentally, a Cubase Studio 4 license will open any program in the SL series.
              Hope that helps...
              Happy Music Making!
              • Just remember too that Cubase 4 does not run DXI plug-ins, (or so I have heard which is why I have not upgraded yet), which is the format that most of the FX plug-ins run on Cubase, like Waves, so you will need to buy a wrapper program to convert all of those FX plug-ins that are DXI, (I think thats what they are called but dont quote me :).

This is just what I have heard, anyone that can confirm or deny would be great, I just dont want to upgrade until it will be seemless.
                • Well, first off, Waves (along with many, many fx and instrument plug-ins) in the past has been able to be installed as DXI or VST. DXI is being dropped industry-wide and will soon be considered a legacy format. The latest versions of the waves plug-ins don't even support it. Also, as far as I can remember, DXI plug-ins run through a wrapper in SX3 called vstdx.dll. It's just that the wrapper is built in. You can download free wrappers that work fairly well, but I would see about getting VST versions of your plug-ins or re-installing the ones that you installed as directx as vst instead. Also, as mentioned earlier, you could continue running SX3 for older projects that would be too time-consuming to convert over to C4.
                  Cheers

ditto on what 'cool hand' says...

my waves plugins have worked in C4 and Nuendo 4 since day one...

although, i've found some companies like URS are a better alternative to the cpu-hungry waves plugs.

DXI plugs are next to worthless... glad to see it go... viva la VST3!

                    • Since they released this update I installed on both my PC and my Macbook and it works brilliantly!
Generally I have observed most of the people sweating the Waves DXI conversion are using cracks anyway (sorry not trying to accuse anyone of using cracks). Waves and their WUP is something to run away from anyway... I have been using UAD-1s x4 and they totally kill, especially on the vintage emulation stuff, highly recommended. Looking forward to trying out C4 on a quadcore 64bit system, still hear some system configs can be painful though. Does anyone have a resource where people are listing stable mainboard/RAM/processor configurations for a quadcore C4 system?
                      • I have a TC Powercore Firewire unit hooked up with SX3, and I freaking love it!!!!

The main reason I got it was for the Finalizer mastering plug-in, man o man my masters come out freaking sick and i've actually started to make an engineering business out of it.

The dynamic EQ and 24/7 limiters are stellar in this thing, and with 6 processor chips I can handle about 40 instances of each running at the same time with no issues.

I"ve thought about UAD cards, but the Powercore gets you a hell of a lot more bang for the buck.

For Cubase, I know they recommend AMD Athlon 64-bit chips and sponsor them on their site and ad's. Not sure how the 64-bit intels will work though.
                        • Totally agreed that the UAD-1s are waaaaaaaaay underpowered, hopefully they will be releasing a new solution this year, they were very nice and extremely cagey about it at NAMM this year... ;)
In fact I haven't bought the CPU hungry Neve stuff yet as you only get about 1 instance of the 33609 per card! I got the Neve 88RS though and as a channelstrip it has completely changed the way I mix, plus you can run a lot of instances per card, so i could give myself a full-on Neve board if I wanted to. I also have found the mastering bundle to floor just about any other plug in I have ever heard. Of course that's no replacement for quality outboard, but...
